Silicon dioxide can exist in crystalline and amorphous forms. Spherical silica standards and colloids are commonly associated with amorphous materials, but the supplier’s composition statement and safety data sheet—not appearance or product name—must establish the exact form.

Even when a material is confirmed amorphous, the buyer still must control particle size, distribution, surface chemistry, medium, aggregation, concentration and certificate scope. “Amorphous” does not imply monodisperse, sterile, endotoxin-controlled, nonporous, uncoated or suitable for a particular instrument.
The exact product documentation and SDS must control. Do not infer structure solely from the word “silica.”
