Amorphous vs. Crystalline Silica Particles

Why structure, product form and exact safety documentation must be confirmed before using or handling silica particles.

Structure matters

“Silica” does not identify one universal material.

Silicon dioxide can exist in crystalline and amorphous forms. Spherical silica standards and colloids are commonly associated with amorphous materials, but the supplier’s composition statement and safety data sheet—not appearance or product name—must establish the exact form.

Application effect

Structure is only one part of fitness for purpose.

Even when a material is confirmed amorphous, the buyer still must control particle size, distribution, surface chemistry, medium, aggregation, concentration and certificate scope. “Amorphous” does not imply monodisperse, sterile, endotoxin-controlled, nonporous, uncoated or suitable for a particular instrument.
