Nanomaterial safety

Apply a hierarchy of controls—not a generic glove statement.

For engineered nanomaterials, exposure assessment should consider the form of the material, likelihood of aerosol or dust generation, transfer method, process enclosure, ventilation, cleaning method and waste route. Dry powder generally creates a different inhalation-control problem than a sealed liquid dispersion.

Frequently asked questions

Should silica dispersions be frozen?

Do not freeze unless the exact product documentation permits it. Freeze-thaw can change concentration, aggregation and container integrity.

How long is an opened bottle usable?

Use the product-specific expiration, opening instructions and performance verification. A general site cannot assign one open-container lifetime.

Is an aqueous silica dispersion automatically nonhazardous?

No. Review the current SDS, concentration, particle size, additives, spill route and process exposure.
