Silica particle technical guide

Functionalized Silica Particles

A technical guide to selecting surface-modified silica particles without treating the functional-group label as proof of performance.

Surface chemistry as a design input

Functionalization changes the particle system—not just the label.

A surface treatment can alter wetting, charge, coupling, steric stabilization, matrix compatibility, hydrodynamic size, optical response and storage. Treat each functionalized family as a separate material requiring its own evidence.

Verify function before optimizing performance.

Selection

Choose from the interface you need to create.

State the matrix, solvent or buffer, target loading, downstream reaction, temperature, mixing process and performance metric. Applied Physics can then evaluate whether a standard functionalized family fits or a custom pathway needs review.

Questions engineers ask

Frequently asked questions

What does amine-functionalized silica mean?

It indicates amine groups are associated with the particle surface under a defined treatment. The chemistry, loading, verification and stability should be requested.

Is hydrophobic silica soluble in organic solvents?

Hydrophobic treatment can change wetting and compatibility, but it does not guarantee molecular solubility or stable dispersion in every solvent.

Do polymer coatings change particle size?

They can change hydrodynamic size, surface properties and optical response. The coated material should be characterized as a distinct product.
