Silica particle technical guide

Silica Nanoparticle Characterization Techniques

A measurand-first framework for selecting and combining methods to characterize silica size, morphology, stability, chemistry and application response.

Measurement strategy

Choose the measurand before the instrument.

Characterization becomes defensible when the question is explicit: primary-particle morphology, hydrodynamic size, mobility size, concentration, surface charge, chemical identity, optical response or application performance.

MethodPrimary useOutput to defineStrongest role
SEM / TEMDirect imagingProjected dimensions, morphology and image-analysis statisticsPrimary-particle geometry and visual evidence

Orthogonal characterization

Use different methods to answer different failure modes.

Size + morphology

Combine a liquid or aerosol size method with microscopy when primary-particle shape and association state matter.

Size + chemistry

Pair diameter evidence with composition, surface-treatment or coating confirmation when functionality drives the application.

Size + application response

Verify that a well-characterized particle produces the expected result in the actual optical, wafer or process system.

Method validation questions

Audit the entire measurement.

Questions engineers ask

Frequently asked questions

What is the best method for measuring silica nanoparticle size?

There is no universal best method. Select the method from the measurand and decision, and use orthogonal techniques when the risk warrants it.

Why do two valid methods report different diameters?

They may measure different physical quantities, use different weightings or require different sample preparation.
